CHAPTER 14

Mr. Grim Face had me shucking it all the way back to the cabin at double speed.

Well, he didn’t have me doing it. I supposed that I did that part myself.

When we arrived back at the cabin, he was giving me his most surly face and everything, as if it was completely my fault that he’d tracked me down to Main Street. That had been his choice, if you asked me.

He could have just waited for me to return instead of making such a big deal about it.

But I did want to learn some magic. I mean, I guessed that I wanted to learn. It was almost too much for my brain after what had happened earlier when the ghosts surrounded me.

Did I want to learn magic?

“You don’t look excited about this,” Grim said.

“I am,” I lied. “I mean, I guess that I am. Something weird happened in town.”

We were standing outside. Though I’d been tempted to put my bathrobe back on (since it was super cozy), I’d overcome the urge. After all, I didn’t want to smell like sleep around Grim because he had the habit of smelling all manly and stuff, like he’d just walked out of the ocean as Zeus’s son or something and was ready to tackle a whole bunch of Greek trials that included things like stealing a golden fleece and killing a Minotaur. He would probably be wearing a loincloth the whole time, too.

For some reason I found myself staring at his crotch.

Luckily he didn’t notice.

“What happened?” he asked, sounding really annoyed with himself that he was even considering wanting to hear the story.

“Well—” I lifted my gaze from his crotch to his thick biceps. How were they that big? “It happened after I left Palmer’s.”

“Palmer’s? You wanted ice cream this early in the morning?”

“No. Yes. Walter’s body is there, and I have his phone. I needed to unlock it so that I could find out who he’d spoken to last. You know, so that I can track down his killer.”

Grim stared at me a beat. Then he tossed his head back and laughed. At me.

“What’s so funny?”

“You want to find his killer?” He stopped laughing and wiped tears from his eyes. “That’s your plan?”

“Do you have a better one? Are you on this investigation?” I was heated up now. “Is this your jurisdiction?”

“I’m more of a consultant.”

“What does that even mean? You run around and suggest that they do things like change a lightbulb?”

A dark shadow passed over his face. “Yes. That’s exactly what it means.”

“No, it doesn’t. You’re only saying that because I said it.” I folded my arms. “Listen, I am grateful to you for helping me out. Can you just forget what I said about Walter and start teaching me magic?”

“You’ll wind up getting hurt if you stick your nose in places where it doesn’t belong.”

“Thank you for the advice.” I stared at him, waiting. “Well? Are we going to begin, or am I just going to stand here until the cows come home?”

Grim rolled his eyes.
